The Four Levels of Editing

Not all edits are the same. Here's exactly what each level does.

Most authors don't need every level — they need the right one. Here's how to know what fits your manuscript.

Level 01I

Developmental Editing

The Big Picture

The deepest level. We look at structure, pacing, character arcs, plot holes, narrative tension, argument flow, and whether your book actually delivers on its promise. Recommended for manuscripts that feel "almost right but I can't say why."

StructurePacingPlot HolesPOVCharacter ArcsTheme
Level 02II

Line Editing

Sentence-Level Craft

Rhythm, tone, word choice, transitions, voice. We sharpen every sentence without erasing the way you sound. For manuscripts where the structure works but the prose needs polish.

Level 03III

Grammar & Consistency

Grammar, punctuation, syntax, style consistency, fact-checking, continuity. Cleans up the technical layer before formatting. For polished drafts heading toward typesetting.

Final Pass

Typos, missing words, formatting glitches, spacing, last-mile catches. The final read before the book goes live. For manuscripts that have already been edited.

Your Voice. Sharpened.

An editor's job isn't to rewrite your book — it's to reveal the one you meant to write.

After staring at the same paragraphs for months, your brain auto-corrects. You read what you meant to write, not what's on the page. Plot holes vanish. Repeated phrases turn invisible. Awkward sentences feel fine. This is normal — and it's exactly why every published author needs a great editor.

Our editors come from Big-5 publishing houses, university creative writing programs and dozens of independent presses. Each one is matched to a manuscript that fits their training and taste.

We don't rewrite. We don't drown the page in track changes. We sharpen what's already there, fix what's quietly broken, and tell you in plain English what every recommendation is for — so when your manuscript comes back, it reads like the book you always meant to write.

What Editors Actually Catch

The mistakes you can't see in your own work.

These are the most common manuscript issues we catch. If any of them sound familiar, your manuscript is almost certainly hiding more.

Filler words & weak modifiers

She really ran very quickly across the kind of empty derelict field.

Passive voice overuse

The decision was made by the committee The committee decided to postpone the vote

POV slips

Sarah opened the door. She didn't know Marcus was watching from the window.upstairs The hallway was dark.

Repetitive sentence openings

She walked. She turned. She saw. She walked, then turned at the corner, eyes catching on the figure under the streetlamp.

Tense shifts

He walks walked into the room and sat down without a word.

Weak chapter openings

It was a sunny Tuesday in October when Sarah went to the store. Sarah didn't notice the man following her until aisle four.

Telling vs. showing

He was angry. His knuckles whitened around the glass; the table buckled under the weight of his silence.

Dialogue tag overload

"Stop," she exclaimed loudly said . "I demanded angrily 'm done ."

Continuity errors

Author Voices

Manuscripts that finally became books.

A few of the authors who handed us their finished work — and walked away as published authors.

★★★★★

"I’m a new author with BookCraft Publishers. After careers in cosmetology and computer programming, I carried a lifelong dream of becoming a writer and kept jotting down every idea that came to me. When I was finally ready to publish my first book, Fly Chicks on Rainbow Mountain, I spoke with Robert Williams at BookCraftPublishers.com. One call was all it took—he made me feel comfortable and important, and I knew I didn’t need to look anywhere else. From there, the BookCraft team professionally handled every step of the publishing process—including needs I didn’t even know I had. The quality of their work is outstanding. They brought my characters and events to life, and the finished book is both beautiful and truly professional. My entire circle of family and friends was impressed. Seeing the final copy, I said to myself, “You’re an author now.” BookCraft is top of the line. They know their stuff. They’re intelligent, friendly, fun to work with, and both artistic and creative. Thanks to BookCraft Publishers, my dream is becoming reality—and I’m already excited to see what they do with my next book, Our Galactic Observers. To my fellow writers and to readers: if you’re considering publishing, I highly recommend BookCraft Publishers."

★★★★★

"Bookcraft helped me to polish my manuscript and make it worth publishing. They provided amazing artwork for the cover. They helped make a synopsis. Then they opened the accounts with KDP and Barnes & Noble. I would have been clueless about any of these steps without them. I can't say enough about how much I appreciate all they did for me."

★★★★★

"My manuscript sat on my hard drive for three years because the publishing process terrified me. BookCraft took it from Word doc to published book in 10 weeks — print, eBook, audio. I'm now selling on Amazon every single day. I couldn't be happier with the process or the result. If you're on the fence about publishing, just talk to them. They made it so easy and clear, and they really know their stuff."

FAQs

Everything Authors Ask Before Sending Us Their Manuscript.

Will the edit change my voice?+

No — preserving your voice is the entire craft. Our editors make suggestions, not rewrites. Everything comes back to you in track changes; you decide what to accept. The goal is to sharpen what you wrote, not replace it. The free editorial assessment also gives you a sense of our editor's tone and approach before you commit a single dollar.

How do I know which type of editing I need?+

You don't have to. Send us your manuscript and we'll tell you. As a rough rule: if you're worried about plot or structure, you need developmental. If sentences feel clunky, you need line. If you want grammar and consistency checked, copy. If everything's done and you need a final read, proofread. Most authors land on the Sentence Edit (line + copy) tier.

How long does an edit take?+

Proofreads: 10–14 days. Sentence Edits (line + copy): 3–4 weeks. Full Edits (with developmental): 5–6 weeks. All for a typical 50–80K-word manuscript. Rush options available for an additional fee. You get a firm completion date in writing before we start.

What exactly is the free editorial assessment?+

It's a 2–3 page written diagnostic of your manuscript, prepared by a genre-matched editor within 5 business days of submission. We cover what's working, what's not, the manuscript's biggest opportunities for improvement, and which level of editing we'd recommend (developmental, line, copy, proofread, or a combination). You walk away with a professional outside opinion on your work — yours to keep, no card, no commitment to hire us.

What if I disagree with the edits?+

You're the author. Reject any change you don't like. We work in track changes precisely so you have full control. If you'd like to discuss specific edits, your editor schedules a 30-minute call to walk through them. The manuscript stays yours, the choices stay yours.

Is my manuscript confidential?+

Yes. NDA signed before we read a single sentence. Only your assigned editor and project manager access the file. We never share, publish, or train any AI on your work. Your manuscript is and remains yours, in full confidence.

Do you edit fiction AND non-fiction?+

Both, plus children's, YA, memoir, business, self-help, academic, and technical books. Each editor specializes in 1–2 genres — we match by genre so the editor reading your thriller has edited thrillers for years, not random texts.
